About The Post House
The Post House served as Kingussie’s post office and sorting hub for nearly nine decades before it was converted. Quirky reminders of the past remain, cleverly blended into this now modern home. There’s a gold-ceilinged downstairs loo disguised as a telephone booth; original wood panelling, tiles and parquet flooring; and even a working parcel hatch.
Edwardian architecture moved towards greater spaciousness and light, with large windows and wide, welcoming hallways. You feel this the moment you step into The Post House, as the renovations have been sympathetic to the building’s character. Each room holds its own delights, such as an impressive view, a four-poster bed, or a nearly four-metre-high ceiling. The post office’s dookits (Scots word for cubby holes) have been repurposed, and the bench where generations of residents and tourists would have stood to stick stamps on letters and postcards is now a handy shelf.
Kitchen and living
The kitchen is kitted out with all the utensils, appliances, serving dishes and glassware you could ever need, whether for an elaborate meal, a cocktail party or a cake-laden afternoon tea. This space is flooded with natural light and swallows up a 3m-long dining table. The adjoining lounge, with its Chesterfield sofas and huge woodburner, also has a dining table that would seat all 13 guests — this one handcrafted from church pews.
Bedrooms and bathrooms
The majority of The Post House is on the ground floor, including five bedrooms, but there is one large bedroom upstairs. This has an adjoining bathroom and office nook with a desk — perhaps in case the home’s history inspires a letter or two.
Outdoors
On the other side of the kitchen is a utility room with plenty of storage, a wine fridge, and a shower room that can be used for hosing down muddy paws. The lodge’s cute private courtyard garden is accessed from here. In it, you’ll discover a hot tub, BBQ, and comfy outdoor seating. The patio is secure for dogs with lots of long grassy walks from the door.
Location
Kingussie has been a popular destination for visitors since Victorian times, when the town’s excellent road and rail connections made it a magnet for those seeking fresh Highland air, a round of golf, a spot of fishing on the River Spey and the opportunity to watch a lively shinty match. All of this — and much more — is on offer today. You’ll never be stuck for something to write in your postcards during a stay here.
