Feshieway Cottage

Seeking a private and peaceful Highland bolthole for two? Your search may well be over. Feshieway Cottage sits in the uplands of the Cairngorms National Park, an in-between landscape of drystone dykes, mixed woodland, rough grazing, mountain views over heather-clad hills and a sprinkling of homes. The single-track road that brings you to the cottage becomes a track just beyond it, so aside from the odd farm vehicle, the only passers-by here are self-powered. 

Originally a gamekeeper’s abode, Feshieway Cottage was built from stone long before central heating existed, with thick walls designed to keep the elements out. Recent renovations have made the most of its history by exposing the original stone, while also reflecting what is desirable in a modern home: large windows to let light in and connect the cottage to its surroundings, modern heating, a woodburning stove and plenty of soft furnishings. 

Kitchen and living

Feshieway Cottage’s cream tongue-and-groove wall cladding, wooden furniture and muted colour scheme give this lodge a farmhouse feel. After passing through a generous boot room, you enter a space that serves as both a dining area and a sun room. This room’s huge double-aspect window makes it one of the best places to take in the local wildlife and the goings on of the surrounding sheep. A glass door connects to the open-plan kitchen and lounge, where there’s a woodburner, sofas and more views. 

You may choose to eat at the breakfast bar in the kitchen, at the dining table, or in warmer weather at the picnic bench just outside. Pop around the back of the cottage to enjoy the seating that overlooks Glen Tromie. It’s the ideal place for an evening drink as the sun sets. 

Bedrooms and bathrooms

This cottage is a spacious one-bedroom getaway. All the rooms that are available to guests are on the ground floor. A corridor leads through from the living space to the tranquil bedroom, which has an en-suite toilet and sink.

Just outside of the bedroom is the main bathroom, which has a bath and separate shower.

Things to do 

Historic Ruthven Barracks and the RSPB’s Insh Marshes Nature Reserve are five minutes from Feshieway Cottage, a bird watches paradise.

If you’re someone who likes to walk, cycle or run, it would be hard to find a place with more opportunities right from the door. The Badenoch Way, which links to the Speyside Way, is 100 metres away. This well-signposted path leads to Kingussie in one direction (a pretty Victorian village with all the amenities you might need) and Kincraig and Aviemore in the other. Carry on up the road that passes the cottage to access Glen Feshie or Glen Tromie, or wander down to the bottom of the road, past the picture-perfect red postbox, to dip in a hidden pool in the River Tromie.

Golf enthusiast have a choice of many nearby clubs including Kingussie, Newtonmore, Boat of Garten and the Spey Valley Championship course.
