Cottages don’t come any more characterful than historic West Lodge. This delightful bolthole for two is just moments from the shore of Loch Insh near Kincraig, 5 miles south of Aviemore. From its crow-step gables to its arched doorways - and even an heraldic Clan McPherson cat carved in stone by the entrance - West Lodge will charm you from the minute you arrive!

Originally the gatehouse to the Dunachton Estate, it was designed by the same architect as Dunachton Lodge. But although this B-listed treasure was built in 1860, it has very recently been refurbished and refitted with lots of comfortable contemporary features - all perfectly proportioned for a relaxing stay for two. It also enjoys stunning views of the Cairngorm Mountain range from the living room and bedroom.

The living room has a cosy woodburner, keeping the lodge toasty even in the snowiest winters. There is a sleek and contemporary kitchen with a lovely big butlers sink, oven, fridge and washing machine. The separate dining room next door in fact seats four - should you decide to invite anyone else to supper during your stay. When the weather is warm and you’d like to enjoy an al fresco lunch or a romantic dinner under the stars there’s a BBQ and outdoor eating area on the decking. The bedroom is light and airy and has a king size bed, and your bathroom has both a bath and shower.

In fact water babies really are spoiled for choice at West Lodge because the owners have also fitted out the cottage with a luxurious outdoor hot tub. However should you prefer a more bracing dip, Loch Insh is within dashing distance of the front door! You can also use the owners’ rowing boat for a little boating tour around Loch Insh. If you fancy trying to catch your own supper, why not speak to us about arranging fishing in the loch? With so many outdoor activities to enjoy, you’ll be pleased to know that you can securely store your bikes, fishing equipment or skis in the stone shed in the garden. The garden is secure and fenced all the way around so perfect if you decide to bring your dog too.

You can walk around the shore of the loch to Kincraig village, a little Highland gem. Its wonderful cafe, The Old Post Office, serves fabulous cream cakes and exquisite Italian food (eat in or takeaway). You can also head further around the loch to reach the watersports centre and Boathouse restaurant. If you’d like to work up a proper appetite first, you can always hire out a dinghy, windsurf, kayak or canoe from their watersports beach beforehand.

West Lodge is the perfect romantic retreat for two.

"Magical little place! Perfect getaway for some peace and timeout. Absolute gem of a place - loved the small touches, wine-coffee-log fire. The hot tub finishes it off perfectly! Thank you. " February 2022

"Hi, we had a great stay, very comfortable and relaxing, and we look forward to booking again in 2022." January 2022

"Lots of lovely walks along Loch Insh seeing a wonderful mixture of wildlife, the dogs had a great time. The cottage is so lovely and cosy and slept so well in the very comfy bed. Loved our stay and I hope we can return very soon. Thank you John and Marina for making us feel so welcome. " April 2022

"We had a wonderful time at West Lodge . A very warm welcome with a chilled bottle in the fridge and nice fresh hens eggs from the farm . The house was spotless and comfortable, well equipped and quite beautiful. We could not fault it at all and will certainly return and recommend to everyone. Finally, communication has been excellent from your team 👍🏻" June 2021

"Amazing stay at West Lodge. Beautiful, high quality, well-equipped and elegantly furnished lodge with fabulous hot-tub. So many lovely touches from wine and coffee when we arrived to beautiful soaps and bed-linen. Right on the edge of Loch Insh where we had some fabulous walks to see wildlife and birds and also the amazing Old Post Office Cafe. Well situated to visit Aviemore and the surrounding attractions. Would definitely recommend and return! " June 2021

"We had the most fantastic time at West Lodge. It started with the lovely wine in the fridge! The location is perfect. We walked, cycled and kayaked from our door. A huge thanks also for the loan of the paddle boards. We didnt get the hand of turning but we did launch. The hot tub was a god send after our walks and as the weather was so fantastic too we spent every evening with a barbie. We will certainly be back and our next trip will be winter time. Thank you for a perfect holiday. " August 2021

"We have had a very relaxing time here. Hot tub was such a bonus after a day in the canoe or hiking. We were fortunate to see Ospreys on Loch Insh while out in the kayak. The paddle boards were lots of fun so thank you. Feshie is worth a visit for a swim. Its so clean and the trails/lochs there are amazing. A great viewing point at the top of the red trail. Thank you for the goodies you left us. Very much appreciated. " August 2021

"We had a lovely time in West Lodge. The house is tastefully decorated and has everything needed for a self catering holiday. Great views of the Cairngorms and we loved sitting in the hot tub watching the ever changing evening skies with a glass of bubbly! We also liked waving at The Caledonian Sleeper Train that went past the lodge every night at quarter to 10! We met John the owner who was friendly and let us try out his paddle board on The Loch which was great fun. The weather was very kind to us with hot sunny days every day ..this meant we could use the bbq provided at the lodge too. Lovely toiletries provided and also a welcome gift of a bottle of wine and some fresh eggs! West Lodge is a great base to explore the beautiful surrounding area of the Highlands. " August 2021

"Wow. We’ve had a lovely stay in such a well equipped and comfortable lodge. The scenery from the front door and from the hot tub was a sight for sore eyes and a privilege. We have really enjoyed our walks and discoveries of this wonderful area. Great location, great lodge, great extras which were very thoughtful. " September 2022

"We had a brilliant time staying at West Lodge - the chilled bottle of rose wine waiting in the fridge on one of the hottest days of the year was a particularly welcome welcome gift, as were the fresh eggs from the owners' hens. There's so much to do around the area - particular highlights for my two teenage boys were zip-wiring at the nearby Zip Trek park and mountain biking at the Glenlivet Estate trails. My two small dogs loved paddleboarding on Loch Insh and there are plenty of good places to walk nearby. The lodge itself is very well-equipped with lots of thoughtful touches, and has a lovely garden and hot tub. I'd definitely recommend West Lodge to anyone who wants to be near to Aviemore and the activities around the Cairngorms area, but wants a bit of peace and quiet too." July 2021

"We had a really restful and comfortable time at the West Lodge. We thought the property was lovely and really thoughtfully put together. The bed was so comfortable, one of the best I think I’ve stayed in for quite some time!! It was a pity we were only there for 3 days but a place I would certainly recommend to others." October 2022

"We had such a wonderful stay at West Lodge, thank you, it was perfect for our little family. Thankfully storm Arwen didn’t disrupt our stay and we managed a couple of lovely walks both in and around Loch Insh and all the way round Loch en Eilein too. The hot tub was a lovely treat amongst the snow and cold weather and we enjoyed the cosy evenings with the log burner. " November 2021

"We had a great time at West Lodge, a lovely place to stay. We especially enjoyed Loch Morlich & Loch Garten. " November 2022
